CCD Dance Styles

Ballet:  This class is taught in the classical traditional style of dance which stresses academic technique, clarity of composition, and serenity of style, line, and placement. All of our ballet classes stress correct terminology, placement and understanding of each movement. This class is offered to first grade and up.

Pre-pointe/Pointe: Before learning pointe work, a dancer must be able to maintain turnout while performing center combinations, hold a proper ballet position with straight back and good turnout, pull up properly in the legs, and balance securely in relevé.  Preparation for pointe work is a gradual process that starts with strengthening exercises at the barre and center floor.Ballet students are generally ready to begin pointe work after achieving competency in fundamental and intermediate ballet technique. These classes are offered by invitation only. Please see studio management for eligibility requirements.

Contemporary: Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modernjazzlyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This class is offered to seventh grade and up.

Jazz: An all-encompassing powerful dance medium which can take various forms, from explosive movement, to lyrical and contemporary pieces (flowing, emotional movement), to sharp and angular lines... you name it! All jazz classes are ballet based, focusing on correct execution of all movement and knowledge of terminology.  This class is offered to first grade and up.

Hip Hop: A colorful and acrobatic style of dance whose musical origin came from the development of rap and hip hop music, but whose art form came from street dancers. All hip hop classes begin with a detailed warm-up, and progress to routines that rotate throughout the year. This class is offered to first grade and up.

Tap: The tapping out of complex rhythmic passages with the feet to create a subtle, intricate and vital physical code of expression. All of our tap classes are technique oriented, progress from warm-up to combination, and are a combination of Broadway tap and rhythm tap. This class is offered to first grade and up.

Pre-School Creative Movement: “Creative Movement” is the term given to class for 3, 4 & 5 year olds who are learning to put movement and music together. Classes consist of a combination of music, props and movement (usually a mixture of ballet, jazz, and coordination exercises) to stimulate both the body and mind to work together.  This class is offered in two sessions. This class is open to 3-5 year olds (must be potty trained).
