It is very difficult to provide exact definitions of dance, because over the centuries, dance itself has morphed into countless beautiful, overlapping and still developing forms; but we'll give it a try. Hint: the best way to know what class is right for you...just do it!
Ballet The classical traditional style of dance which stresses academic technique, clarity of composition, and serenity of style, line, and placement. All of our ballet classes stress correct terminology, placement and understanding of each movement.
Creative Movement Creative Movement is the term given to class for 3 & 4 year olds who are learning to put movement and music together. Classes consist of a combination of music, props and movement (usually a mixture of ballet, jazz, and coordination exercises) to stimulate both the body and mind to work together.
Jazz An all-encompassing powerful dance medium which can take various forms, from explosive movement, to lyrical style (flowing, emotional movement), to sharp and angular lines... you name it! All jazz classes are ballet based, focusing on correct execution of all movement and knowledge of terminology.
Hip-Hop A colorful and acrobatic style of dance whose musical origin came from the development of rap and hip hop music, but whose art form came from street dancers, making hip hop in its various forms "the ultimate expression of oneself." All hip hop classes begin with a detailed warm-up, and progress to routines that rotate throughout the year.
Break Dancing Is a street dance style that developed as part of the hip hop movement in NYC in the early 1970's. It utilizes the "break" in the song to showcase different movements and is usually done to hip hop, rap or "beat box" style music. The class includes a short warm-up followed by learning basic and power moves and culminates in a "battle" circle where each dancer takes a turn to showcase his skills.
Tap The tapping out (usually, but not always, by means of shoes) of complex rhythmic passages to create a subtle, intricate and vital physical code of expression. All of our tap classes are technique oriented, progress from warm-up to combination, and are either broadway based (Rockette style tap) or hoofing/rhythm based (Gregory Hines style tap).
WORKSHOPS Throughout the year City Center Dance offers workshops in vaious forms of dance. Be on the lookout for our up-and-coming workshops in Lyrical, Modern, Broadway, Jumps & Turns, Body Placement and more.
